Wildcrafted & Land Based Products

Foraging & forest gardening for subsistence & wellbeing…

As part of our mission of food sovereignty & sustainability, foraging and forest gardening are also central to what we do. Foraged & wild tended plants are always sustainably harvested, & used to create food, medicine, & body care products for our household, with a few small quantities available for sale from time to time. You are likely to see a variety of wild & forest gardened tea blends, herb infused wild tallow body care products, including soaps, creams, & balms, as well as herbal magnesium soaks & oils.

We also have extensive berry plantings that we are tending in a “food forest” model. Our non-native vegetables & herbs are “forest gardened” because we strive to work in harmony with the existing boreal forest environment, rather than imposing destructive agricultural methods upon it. Along with consciously avoiding the introduction of any non-native species to the surrounding environment, we employ a variety of practices in our gardens to mimic the natural soil, nutrient, & fertility cycles of the forest around us. Principals include elements of regenerative agriculture, permaculture, & hugekultur, using materials at hand almost entirely, with very few modern “agricultural inputs”. Although soils in the region tend to be only an inch or two thick, we build deep fertile soils by mimicking the naturally occurring layers of the decomposing forest floor, using rotting logs & moss, leaf mulch, fish carcasses, & self-made compost, bone & blood meal… there is little waste in our fish processing. As a result, our vegetables & herbs are definitely not “vegetarian”! They thrive on the nutrients provided by the Lake.
