Sustainable Fishery and Traditional Fish Products
Small scale, wild caught, sustainable East Arm fish….
The waters of Great Slave Lake are known as some of the cleanest & most pristine in Canada… & the East Arm of the Lake is known internationally for the sweetest water & best quality fish in the Lake, with larger fish, firmer flesh, & absolutely beautiful flavour. Species include lake trout, whitefish, coney (inconnu), northern pike, burbot, & the occasional pickerel & grayling. We specialize in small scale sustainable fishery practices, & the production of traditional dried products: whitefish & lake trout dryfish, fish chips, & dryfish pemmican. We also produce candied lake trout & coney, & cold smoked lake trout & coney, as well as pike & whitefish caviar seasonally. Our fishing practices are not only small scale, but we choose to avoid the use of ice augers & motorized equipment in favour of ice chisels, arm power, & dog teams in the Winter, & good old fashioned paddle power in the Summer. All products are dried &/or smoked in our log built smokehouse, fuelled by sustainably harvested standing deadwood.
As far as we know, we are possibly the most remote commercial fishers around the Lake. We do our best to practice Land & Water stewardship with respect to those who came before us, & on whose Land we are welcomed as guests. We believe in creating affordable, traditional, staple foods that everyone can access. While making a humble living from fishing, we provide for the bulk of our needs self sufficiently, through subsistence gardening, fishing, & hunting. The sale of fish covers “flour, coffee, dairy, & chocolate” we like to joke, & we do our best to enjoy these “luxury” foods in a moderate way. It also helps with repairs to infrastructure like skidoos & small craft that make it possible to live at such a remote location, accessible only by ice or water routes.
