Coming home to the body, & the landscape of which it is a part.
I have a deep belief that the body is an extension of the Landscape. Movement can be a devotional practice that honours both the Land, the Self, & connection between the two. Regular movement practice is an opportunity to attend to the body, mind & spirit with reverence, care, & respect, fully recognizing ourselves as an integral part in the unfolding of creation, & the beauty of Nature. Movement practice also primes us for action in the Landscape, the good work we wish to do in the world. It creates healthy habits for functional movement & the prevention of injuries. Our work, play, & creative pursuits are all supported by healthy functional movement. Rather than striving to make “fancy” shapes, I hope to create a safe practice space where participants can fully inhabit the body, “just as it is” on any given day, creating shapes that feel aligned & healthful. I employ a variety of different styles to seek harmony, finding a balance of consistency with responsive self care, strength with healing, & engagement with ease.
Yoga with respect & awareness…
I continue to work to recognize the origins, meanings, and larger context of the yogic practice… pursuing studies that integrate the fuller cultural contexts, emphasize the entire Eight Limbs of the yogic path (physical asana practice being only one), acknowledge the history of colonization. As a “western” yoga teacher, it is my responsibility to shift the energy of my contributions from colonizer-perpetrator to colonizer-ally. Yoga is such a deep & valuable tradition, that all humans can benefit from if they choose, even colonizers… because sitting with yogic teachings encourages the self-study necessary to notice potential harms we may be committing every day, & hopefully shines a light on how to avoid causing such harms. I endeavour to create a space that is safe & inclusive for all bodies, minimizing harms & increasing sensitivities to traumas & a diversity of lived experiences. I strive to do better every day, & welcome any & all feedback that could help me be of better service.
Online group practice, for all bodies & a focus on functional movement for everyday life.
I both led and participated in group practice regularly while living is Nova Scotia, & such practice became a central to my life. The move to a remote camp in Denendeh shifted my focus to the work of subsistence gardening, fishing, & many daily tasks that it is a privilege & joy to participate in. But my commitment towards practice in community remains. With better & better access to communications technology here at camp, it is my hope to start offering regular weekly practice opportunities (free/donation based), as an offering of thanks to all who have practiced with me in the past, & to anyone with barriers to access such as remote living, finances, transportation, or the like.
